“Mom, Grandma, and anyone who watches this would be so proud of you tonight. I know with all my heart that my mother will make us proud as our new president.” Lovingly Chelsea Clinton spoke at the last day of the convention in Philadelphia to the crowd.

How different was that 24 years ago, when she first appeared on stage at the Democratic convention? A little shyly smiling teenage girl stood beside her father. It was 1992, and Bill Clinton wanted to be president of the United States.

It would not be long before there came a turbulent time for the family. In the middle of the election, campaign rumors popped up about the love life of Bill Clinton. He would have had an affair with model and actress Gennifer Flowers. It was not only rumors. The media surfaced in full.

In a second interview with the television program 60 Minutes, the couple was critically questioned. Was the marriage between Hillary and Bill no more than a marriage of convenience? “I’m not here as a woman who stands behind her husband as singer Tammy Wynette with her song” Stand by your man. “I’m here because I love him, and because I was and everything we revere through together. If that is not enough for people, then heck, do not vote for him. ”

Clinton said that money is often the argument is to bring out something and took off the incident as a conspiracy against the future president.

Hillary and Bill about the affair with Gennifer Flowers. Thus the issue for the couple was sealed, although Bill later had to admit under oath that he had indeed had sex with Flowers.

The unity within the family was put back to the test in January 1998 when it came to light that Bill Clinton had had an affair with a White House intern. The president kept long insisted that he had done nothing with Monica Lewinsky. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman. These accusations are incorrect.”

Also during this affair remained Hillary publicly support her husband, and she took her old argument again stable. “Since my husband announced that he wanted to be president, there are conspiracies against him.”

During the (failed) impeachment by Congress, Bill Clinton admitted that there was still talk of an improper relationship with Lewinsky. The witness was sworn seen on television. “I know that my public appearance and my silence about it gave the wrong impression. I misled people, including my wife. I’m very sorry.”

“I did not have sexual relations with That Woman.’ I almost could not talk to him, and if I did, I burst into a tirade. Hillary Clinton on the day that Bill confessed the affair with Lewinsky
The apparently musical family then made a difficult period indeed. In her biography, Hillary looked back on the day that Bill Frank played with her. “He forced me wake up early and told that indeed inappropriate harassment had been with Lewinsky. He could I not say to you seven months ago, he said, because he was too embarrassed to admit it, and he knew how painful it would be for me be. I could hardly breathe. I started crying and yelling at him. ”

“Although after his confession had remained undiminished high reached in the polls, our relationship was rock bottom. I could hardly talk to him, and if I did, I burst into a tirade.”

Hillary Bill forced to confess everything to their daughter Chelsea. “Those were terrible moments for all of us,” she looked back.

The teenage girl then is now a mother of two children who speaks to the nation without batting an eyelid. This week it became apparent again at the convention in Philadelphia: despite all the difficulties of the past, are the noses in the family all the same way again.

Essential difference: this time Chelsea do not have to stand right behind her father, but she stands up for her mother. “It is such an honor for me to be here. As a proud Democrat, a proud mother. And tonight, especially when a huge proud daughter.”
